This Week at Here’s My Chance
Our HMC team members are often inspired weekly and we want to let you in on some of our best kept secrets. We love the daily work that we do, but our inspiration also comes from outside sources. We’re giving you a peek at the “HMC book shelf,” and pulling from the brains of our team to share their insights with you!
This week we are featuring Nicola Black, HMC’s Lead Designer! Her book of choice: The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Illustrated by Charles Santore.
Q: Why did you originally buy this book?
A: I bought the Wizard of Oz children’s book while in college. Charles Santore is a local illustrator who worked in my chosen medium (at the time), watercolor. As soon as I saw his illustrations, I was hooked!
Q: What are you most inspired by when looking through it?
A: His layouts and composition. The pages are incredibly detailed and beautiful! It reminds me of the days when I used to paint and always inspires me to experiment. I want to take a few hours now to just play after looking through it!
A: This is cliche, but it’s true…. the shower. I always come up with great ideas in the shower. That and when I’m working out, which reminds me… I really need to get on that! Great ideas hit me when my mind is relaxed/turned off or in a non-working zone. It’s just how it goes.
Q: Would you recommend it to other designers and why?
A: I don’t know if I’d necessarily recommend this book to other designers so much as illustrators. But if a designer has an interest in traditional illustration, I’d definitely recommend this book. I carried it with me during my school days as inspiration when I used watercolor in my day-to-day creating. It always reminded me of how incredibly AWESOME you could be. Charles Santore is an incredible illustrator and was a large part of shaping who I am through my journey as an illustrator and designer.Google+
